A great fundraiser event for STARS and Callum Fairhurst
This has been a fantastic event for both organisations and we are pleased to say that the Liam Fairhurst Foundation has donated funds to STARS to provide supervision and training for our volunteer counsellors.
Thank you for your fantastic support.
Grant Thornton's Cambridge team is fundraising for STARS!
Children donate toys to help local youngsters cope with bereavement
A group of local children has given away some of their toys to a Cambridgeshire bereavement support charity to help provide comfort to young people coping with the death of a loved one.
The donation to STARS, which offers bereavement support and counselling to youngsters up to the age of 25 across the county, was made by the children of Grant Thornton’s team in Cambridge. The financial and business advisory firm is supporting STARS throughout the year as its chosen charity for 2016.
The children visited the charity to donate their toys in person which included a dolls house, soft toys and reading books. The gifts will be used by STARS to encourage young people coping with bereavement to express their emotions and feelings about the person they have lost through play.
Joy Naylor who joined STARS as a trustee after hearing about the charity’s valuable work from husband Paul Naylor who is Head of Growth at Grant Thornton’s Cambridge office, commented: “The toys will make a real difference to the young people we help come to terms with the death of a close family member or friend. We believe in offering an alternative, creative approach to counselling and encourage children to make and play with toys to help them process their feelings and emotions during a very difficult time.
“Unfortunately, we are seeing a growing demand from parents and schools in Cambridge for our services and the toys, as well as the money the Grant Thornton team has already raised this year, are essential to ensure every child receives the support they need.”
Grant Thornton’s Cambridge office has a series of fundraising activities planned throughout the rest of the year including ‘dress down Fridays’ and collecting ‘jars for STARS’ with the aim of raising over £3,000 for the charity.
Charlotte Mawby of Grant Thornton’s Cambridge office, added: “The enthusiasm of all the children who donated their toys to help other youngsters has been amazing. The brilliant team at STARS provides essential support to those coping with grief and we hope our donation, combined with the money we are continuing to raise, will make a real difference.”
STARS provides bereavement and counselling support to children and young people across Cambridgeshire as well as guidance and advice for parents and carers.
